What exactly is a Rubik's Cube mosaic?
A Rubik's Cube mosaic is a picture built out of many 3×3 Rubik's Cubes arranged in a grid. Each cube contributes a 3×3 patch of coloured stickers — nine "pixels" — and the entire artwork uses only the six colours found on a standard cube: white, yellow, red, orange, blue, and green. When you stand back, your eye blends the six colours into apparent shades of pink, brown, teal, and grey, the same way an old-fashioned newspaper photograph blends black-and-white dots into greys.
How is this different from just pixelating an image?
Two ways. First, the palette is fixed at six colours — you can't cheat by adding a pastel to smooth a gradient — which forces the generator to use perceptual colour matching and Floyd–Steinberg dithering to hide the banding. Second, the output is physical: each 3×3 tile has to correspond to a real Rubik's Cube face, which means the generator also has to produce a move sequence that gets a real cube into that specific pattern.
Do I need to know how to solve a Rubik's Cube?
No, not for the sticker-swap build method. If you peel and reapply stickers using replacement sheets, you're following a paint-by-numbers sheet — no cube knowledge required. If you prefer the solve-based method (turn each cube from a scramble into the target pattern using algorithms), you'll want to know standard beginner-method notation: U, D, L, R, F, B for the six face turns, a prime (') for counter-clockwise, and a 2 for a double turn.
How many cubes will I need?
Multiply cubes-wide by cubes-tall. A 12×12 mosaic is 144 cubes and fits on a desk; a 25×25 mosaic is 625 cubes and is about 1.5 m across; a 50×50 mosaic is 2,500 cubes and starts to be a serious wall installation. Which cube brand should I buy in bulk?
The current safe defaults for mosaic work are the MoYu MeiLong 3×3 (around $2.20/unit at 100+ quantity) and the QiYi Sail W (around $2.50/unit). Both are stickered, both use the standard six-colour scheme, and both have good batch-to-batch colour consistency — the single most important factor for a mosaic that reads cleanly from a distance. Stickered or stickerless?
Stickered, for anything bigger than about 200 cubes. Stickerless cubes have coloured plastic tiles instead of adhesive stickers, which means you can't use the sticker-swap build method — you have to solve every cube. Solving 2,500 cubes takes roughly ten times as long as sticker-swapping them, so stickered wins for large mosaics. Stickerless is fine for small showpieces where you enjoy the solving.
What image works best?
High contrast, simple shapes, and a colour palette that already lives near the cube's six primaries. Portraits with strong side-lighting, brand logos on flat backgrounds, sunsets, comic-book panels, and iconic album covers all work well. Pastel photographs, busy landscapes, and anything with essential fine text tend to lose legibility at cube scale. The build guide has a full checklist.
What resolution should I choose?
A rule of thumb: the mosaic needs to be about twice as wide in cubes as your subject's smallest important feature in the source photo is, measured in image-widths. For a face where the eyes are about 1/10 of the frame wide, that means at least 20 cubes wide; 30–40 cubes wide is when portraits really start to click; 50+ cubes wide is genuinely photo-realistic.
What is Floyd–Steinberg dithering and why does it matter?
Dithering is a technique for approximating colours a palette doesn't contain by mixing the colours it does. Floyd–Steinberg is a specific 1976 algorithm that spreads the rounding error from one pixel into its neighbours in a fixed pattern, which produces the "grainy but photographic" look you see on old newspaper photos. In our tool it's what lets six cube colours pretend to be brown, teal, pink, or grey. Turning it off ("High fidelity" toggle) is fine for logos and comic-book art; leave it on for photographs.
How long does a real build take?
A comfortable sticker-swap pace is about one cube per minute once you're warmed up. A 625-cube mosaic is therefore roughly 10 focused hours of work; a 2,500-cube mosaic is a two-week evenings-and-weekends project. Solve-based builds run 3–4× slower unless you're an experienced speedcuber. Framing and mounting add a weekend on top.
Can I build a mosaic without gluing the cubes?
Yes, and we recommend it. Build a plywood grid with one cell per cube, back it with hardboard, and press-fit each cube into its cell — the friction plus a thin strip of foam tape at the bottom is enough to hold cubes vertically without adhesive. This lets you scramble the wall and rebuild a completely different picture on the same frame later, which is half the joy of the medium.
Is the tool free? Are there hidden limits?
The tool is free, with no account, no watermarks, and no export limit. There is no "pro" tier. The site is monetised by AdSense — contextual advertising you can see next to the generator — which is why we can afford to keep the tool free and off-the-shelf. Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. All image processing runs locally in your browser through the HTML Canvas API. You can verify this yourself by opening the Network tab in your browser's DevTools while generating a mosaic: you'll see the initial page load, then complete silence. The exported PDF and TXT files are also generated locally and offered as browser downloads.
Can I use my own custom palette?
Not yet. The generator is locked to the six standard cube colours so the output matches real hardware you can actually buy in bulk. Custom-palette support (for stickerless cubes with alternative colour schemes, or for people using coloured paper tiles instead of cubes) is on the roadmap.
Can I use the exported PDF commercially?
Yes, provided the source image is one you have the right to use. The mosaic patterns derived from your images belong to you; we don't claim any licence to your outputs. See the Terms of Service for the full framing.
The mosaic looks wrong — orange and red have blended together. What happened?
This usually means the source photo has warm mid-tones that sit exactly on the boundary between the cube's red and orange stickers in perceptual colour space. Try increasing the cubes-wide setting (more resolution gives dithering more room to separate the colours) or tweaking the source image's contrast slightly before uploading. If you're building a portrait, side-lighting the source subject harder is usually the single biggest quality improvement available.
Can the tool run offline?
Once the page has loaded once, everything except the ads runs entirely client-side, so temporary network drops during a session won't interrupt your mosaic generation. We don't currently ship a service worker for full offline installability, but adding one is on the roadmap.
What browsers are supported?
The current major versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on both desktop and mobile. The tool relies on standard Canvas 2D APIs and doesn't need WebGL or WebAssembly, so it works on modest hardware — including Chromebooks and older iPads commonly used in classrooms.
I want to run a classroom workshop. Any tips?
Yes. Start smaller than you think — a 12×12 mosaic (144 cubes) is an achievable one-day project for a group of 8–12 students working in pairs. Print the PDF export ahead of time so students aren't tethered to screens during the build. And plan for at least 15% replacement stickers; the first few cubes are always sacrificial while everyone finds their rhythm. We'd love to hear how it goes — write in.
