    How to make a Rubik's Cube mosaic

    A Rubik's Cube mosaic is a wall of solved-but-scrambled 3×3 cubes arranged so that, viewed from across a room, the coloured stickers form a picture. Each cube contributes nine "pixels" and the entire palette is limited to six colours: white, yellow, red, orange, blue, and green. This beginner-to-pro guide walks through every step, from picking the right source image to hanging the finished wall.

    1. Pick the right image

    Six colours is a very small palette, so the images that translate best have three things in common: strong contrast between the subject and background, simple large shapes, and a colour range that already sits close to the cube's primaries. Portraits with hard side-lighting, brand logos on flat backgrounds, sunsets, comic-book panels, and iconic album covers all work well. Busy landscapes, pastel colour schemes, and photos with lots of fine text usually don't — try a black-and-white version instead.

    2. Choose your resolution

    The slider above sets how many cubes wide the mosaic will be. Because every cube is 3×3 stickers, a mosaic that is N cubes wide is 3N pixels wide. Ten cubes wide is a quick weekend logo build, 25 cubes wide is a recognisable portrait about 1.5 m across, 50 cubes wide is a wall-sized piece with real detail, and 100+ cubes wide starts to look photo-realistic at the cost of thousands of cubes.

    3. Generate the mosaic

    When you upload a photo, the generator resizes it to the target grid, converts every pixel to a perceptual colour space (not raw RGB), and rounds each pixel to the closest of the six cube colours. Enabling High fidelity uses Floyd–Steinberg dithering, which spreads rounding error into neighbouring pixels so the eye blends the six colours into apparent shades of pink, brown, teal, and grey — the same trick newspapers use to print photos with only black ink.

    4. Export the move sequences

    Every cube in the mosaic ships with a move list in standard notation (U, D, L, R, F, B, with a prime for inverse and a 2 for double turns). Export everything as a paginated PDF you can carry to your build table, or as a plain TXT file. Each cube is labelled with its row and column so you can place it in the frame without second-guessing orientation.

    5. Assemble the physical mosaic

    Work row-by-row and place each completed cube face-up into a shallow tray laid out in the same grid as the target picture. Two common build strategies: solve-based (treat each cube's target pattern as its "solved" state and reach it with standard algorithms — slow but rewarding) and sticker-swap (peel and reapply stickers directly using replacement sheets — much faster for large mosaics). For a 40-cube-wide mosaic you'll need roughly 1,000 cubes, which makes it a great classroom or maker-space project.

    6. Mount and light it

    Small mosaics fit in deep shadow-box frames. For larger walls, build a plywood grid with a cell for each cube, backed by hardboard, and press-fit each cube into its cell — no glue required so you can scramble the wall and rebuild a new picture later. Side-lighting from a lamp pulls the sticker colours forward and hides the black gaps between cubes.

    Why Rubik's Cube art works

    Rubik's Cube mosaics sit at an unusual intersection of maths, puzzle theory, and pixel art. Every face of a solved cube contributes a fixed 3×3 grid of one colour, but any scrambled cube can show any combination of the six sticker colours on a single face — which means each cube can act as an arbitrary 9-pixel "super-pixel" in a mosaic. The catch is that a face isn't independent: rotating any layer to place a sticker where you want it also disturbs the other five faces. Solving that constraint per cube is the whole reason this generator exists. Under the hood it treats every target 3×3 pattern as a "goal state" and searches for a short move sequence from a fixed starting position that lands the requested stickers on the front face, ignoring the rest.

    The style has real cultural history. Cube mosaics started appearing in maker-space showcases in the late 2000s, and the artist Pete Fecteau's Dream Big — a 4,242-cube portrait of Martin Luther King Jr. built in 2010 — is often credited with pushing the format into the mainstream. Since then, dozens of teams have built cube walls of everything from van Gogh's Starry Night to logos of Fortune 500 companies for corporate lobbies. What makes the medium interesting is that it enforces a very old aesthetic constraint — a fixed six-colour palette on a strict square grid — with a very modern build process, where a laptop does the colour matching and a human does the mechanical work.

    How many cubes do I need?

    Multiply cubes-wide by cubes-tall. A square 25×25 mosaic is 625 cubes; a 50×50 is 2,500. The generator shows the exact count once you upload an image.

    Where should I buy cubes?

    Most builders use budget "speed cube" clones in bulk from AliExpress, eBay, or a specialist reseller — real Rubik's-brand cubes get expensive at mosaic scale. Order all of them from the same batch so the sticker colours match, and inspect a sample for oddities like pink-instead-of-orange or purple-instead-of-blue before committing.

    Do I need to know how to solve a Rubik's Cube?

    Only for the solve-based build strategy. Sticker-swap builders don't need to know a single algorithm — the exported PDF is essentially a paint-by-numbers sheet.

    How long does a mosaic take?

    Sticker-swap builders average roughly one cube per minute once they've settled into a rhythm. That puts a 625-cube mosaic at about ten focused hours of work, and a 2,500-cube mosaic at a two-week evenings-and-weekends project.

    Are my images uploaded anywhere?
