Case study: a 24 × 16 sunset landscape mosaic
Sunsets are the single most forgiving photographic subject for a six-colour mosaic, because the scene's own palette already sits on the yellow–orange–red arc that cube stickers cover exactly. This build finished faster and looked closer to its source than any portrait of the same cube count.

Why the palette fits
Quantisation error is the distance between a source pixel's colour and the nearest available sticker. In a portrait that distance is large everywhere, because human skin is a desaturated orange-brown that no sticker matches. In a sunset the sky is genuinely saturated yellow, orange and red — the same hues the palette provides — so the error collapses and the mosaic tracks the photograph closely.
The sea and land are the weak spots instead. Water reflecting a sunset tends to be a dark desaturated red-brown, and vegetation is a muted green; both get pulled toward saturated stickers that look louder than the original. Cropping to favour sky over land solved more of this than any setting.
Fighting horizon banding
A sunset gradient runs in one direction, which is exactly the condition that produces visible stripes: as the sky darkens, every sticker in a horizontal band flips to the next colour at the same moment, and the eye reads that boundary as a hard line that does not exist in the photograph.
Dithering is the fix, and this was the build where it mattered most. With Floyd–Steinberg on, the transition from yellow to orange spreads over four rows of cubes as an interleaved mix instead of switching in one row. Adding a small amount of noise to the source image before uploading had a similar effect and is worth trying when a gradient still bands after dithering.
Aspect ratio and cropping
Landscape subjects deserve landscape mosaics. A 3:2 crop at 24 × 16 cubes came to 384 cubes — the same count as a 16 × 24 portrait, and a useful reminder that cube count depends only on the product of the two dimensions.
The crop was chosen before uploading rather than left to the tool. Placing the horizon roughly one third from the bottom kept two thirds of the cubes in the part of the scene the palette renders well, which is a compositional decision that also happens to be a technical one.
Build data and mounting
384 cubes, six panels of 8 × 8, about nine hours of sticker swapping at an average of 80 seconds per cube — slightly faster than the portraits because large single-colour regions let several cubes be stickered in a row without re-reading the build sheet.
At 27 kg on a 1.34 m wide panel set, the load was spread across three fixings into masonry. Glare was the real mounting problem: a glossy sunset mosaic under a raking ceiling spotlight lost its whole top third to reflection. Moving to diffuse frontal light restored it.
